世界上第一个实验室认可组织是澳大利亚在1947年成立的国家检测机构协会，即NATA（National Association of Testing Authorities），NATA的建立得到了澳大利亚联邦政府、专业研究所和工业界的支持。
NATA认为对实验室检测结果的信任应建立在实验室对其工作质量和技术能力进行管理控制的基础上。于是NATA着手找出可能影响检测结果可靠性的各种因素，并把它们进一步转化为可实施、可评价的实验室质量管理体系；与此同时，在按有关准则对实验室评审的实践中不断研究和发展评审技巧，重视评审员培训与能力的提高。这便形成了最初的实验室认可体系。目前NATA已认可了3000多家实验室，为其服务的具有资格的评审员约2500人。
